HELMET HURLING

Team Size: 8
Role: Game Designer
Timeframe: 4 weeks
Project type: VR minigame
Engine: Unreal Engine 5

A short minigame where the player must score points by firing helmets from a ballista into a Skee-Ball machine. The game was developed in VR as part of a team consisting of four artists, one programmer and two other designers. Our approach was to take traditional Skee-Ball and match it with a ballista firing sequence.

Given the difficulties we countered with transferring velocity properly in VR, we opted to follow this design rather than having the player roll the helmets by hand. This produced more stable and reliable physics behaviour for the helmets, improving the player experience overall. Since the game was required to adopt a Dwarven aesthetic, the use of a mechanical wooden ballista also fit well with the theme.

Roles & responsibilities:
• UI design (menus, leaderboard, shop)
• VR interaction system
• Feedback systems (token counting, skee-ball machine, helmet selection)
• Saving and loading system
